The Questions We Get All the Time (Answered)

If you’ve ever stopped by the Cookie Cart or our cottage bakery in Roswell GA, sent us a DM, or chatted with us at a market, you’ve probably asked at least one of these.

And honestly… we love that.

Because behind every question is someone who’s curious, supportive, and maybe just trying to figure out how to get their hands on another cookie (very fair).

So today, we’re answering the most common questions we get about our little Roswell bakery, the real, behind-the-scenes version. In this post, we’re sharing the answers to the questions we hear the most: how this all started, who actually does what, where our recipes come from, and a few things you might not expect.

First—hi, if you’re newer here 👋

Mind Your Biscuits is our mother-daughter cottage bakery based in Roswell, GA. Everything is baked in our home kitchen and sold at our Cookie Cart, local markets, and through pre-orders.

It started small (like, really small), and somehow turned into something we get to share with our community every week.

1. “Why did you start this?”

Short answer? Alex needed something to do that didn’t involve a screen.

Longer answer… it started as a way for her to earn some extra money over the summer and help cover things for all-star cheer, like private lessons, and all the extras that come with being a competitive athlete (she basically lives at the gym).

At the same time, I’ve always loved to bake. It’s how I show love, unwind, and honestly, I’ve always dreamed of having a small bakery or farmstand.

This just… kind of showed up as an option one day. And then it took off faster than we expected.

2. “How much does Alex actually do?”

This one makes me laugh a little.

Alex does a lot.

She preps and makes all of the cookie and pastry doughs, handles dry mixes and pantry items, and is usually the one portioning everything out. I help run the ovens (we usually have three going). She ropes in her sister and dad when needed, sometimes willingly, sometimes with a little bribery.

She also packages, labels, manages inventory, orders supplies, and runs payment at the cart and markets.

She’s even getting a crash course in overhead and taxes (fun for everyone involved 😅), though Georgia’s lemonade-stand laws give her some flexibility.

And creatively? The name, branding, colors, that was all her. She does have the advantage of a mom who’s spent a few decades in marketing (and I make a mean sourdough), but she definitely has her own point of view.

It’s very much a family effort. No one is doing just one job, and nothing happens without everyone pitching in.

3. “Where do your recipes come from?”

This is one of our favorite parts. Some recipes are family classics, like our four-generation oatmeal raisin cookies, Grandma’s chocolate cake, and our cousin Laura’s mint cocoa snappers. Those are the ones that feel like home.

Others come from a lot of testing, tweaking, and seasonal inspiration. I’ll get an idea and start playing with it until it’s right.

And for more technical things, like sourdough or bagels, we’ve learned a lot from other bakers who are incredibly generous with their knowledge. There’s a real sense of community in baking, and we love being part of that.

4. “Do you have a storefront?”

Not in the traditional sense.

We operate under Georgia’s cottage food laws, which means everything is baked in our home kitchen bakery in Roswell, GA and follows strict safety and labeling guidelines (you could practically eat off the floor).

Because of that, we focus on shelf-stable items. You won’t see things like cream cheese frostings or custard-based desserts that require refrigeration.

It gives us flexibility, allows us to run this from home, and enables us to build at a pace that works for our family.

That said, we are a real business. We are registered with the state, have an LLC, carry insurance, and hold a business license. We just happen to do it in a way that looks a little different than a traditional brick-and-mortar bakery.

5. “Where did the name come from?”

“Mind Your Biscuits” is a little nod to Southern roots and my grandma (Nan Nan), who made the best biscuits and blackberry jam.

But it’s also inspired by two very loud, very lovable dogs, Puddles and Biscuit, who you’ve probably heard if you’ve ever walked down the road by our house.

Let’s just say… they are not great at minding their own biscuits.

Bonus: “What’s the best part of all this?”

There are a lot of good things: less screen time for the kids, learning how to run a business, and having a creative outlet.

But the best part, hands down, has been the community.

Getting to know the people who stop by week after week, the other vendors at markets, the kids, the dogs, and the conversations in between makes everything feel smaller in the best way.

It feels a little like the kind of hometown we all wish we lived in.
